PRAY THE PSALMS

Four movements for attentive reading

The Psalms do not ask you to hide difficult emotion. They teach emotion to speak truthfully in God's presence. Compare their voices with the types of prayer across Scripture, use the daily devotion guide to build a rhythm, and place the collection within the Old Testament library.

  1. 01

    Name the voice

Who is speaking, to whom, and from what circumstance? Notice whether the voice is individual, communal, royal, or liturgical.

  2. 02

    Trace the movement

Many Psalms turn—from complaint to trust, memory to praise, danger to refuge, or summons to response.

  3. 03

    Honor hard language

Lament and judgment language should be studied honestly, not imitated carelessly or used to baptize personal revenge.

  4. 04

    Make it prayer

Borrow the Psalm's words, then answer in your own. Carry one line into worship, silence, action, or conversation.

A SMALL NEXT STEP

You do not have to have everything figured out.

Begin with one honest question, one passage read carefully, and one faithful next step.
