What Is Advent?
Advent (from Latin "adventus" meaning "coming") is the four-week season of preparation before Christmas. It's a time of anticipation, hope, and reflection on Christ's arrival.
The Two Comings of Christ
First Coming: Christmas
Already Happened
Jesus came as a baby in Bethlehem to save humanity from sin. We celebrate His incarnation—God becoming flesh.
"The Word became flesh and dwelt among us" (John 1:14)Second Coming: His Return
Still to Come
Jesus will return in glory to judge the world and establish His eternal kingdom. We wait expectantly for His return.
"This same Jesus...will come back in the same way" (Acts 1:11)The Four Weeks of Advent
Week 1: Hope
The prophets foretold the Messiah's coming. Hope in God's promises fulfilled in Christ.
Week 2: Peace
Jesus is the Prince of Peace who reconciles us to God and brings peace on earth.
Week 3: Joy
The angels announced "good news of great joy"—the Savior is born!
Week 4: Love
God's love demonstrated in sending His Son. "For God so loved the world..."
The Advent Wreath
Traditionally, an Advent wreath has 5 candles:
- Purple candle (Week 1): Hope
- Purple candle (Week 2): Peace
- Pink candle (Week 3): Joy (Gaudete Sunday)
- Purple candle (Week 4): Love
- White candle (Christmas): Christ—the light of the world
How to Observe Advent
- Light Advent Candles: Each Sunday, light another candle and reflect on that week's theme
- Read Scripture Daily: Use an Advent devotional or read prophecies about Christ's coming
- Pray with Anticipation: Ask God to prepare your heart for Christmas and Christ's return
- Slow Down: Resist holiday busyness. Make space for worship and reflection
- Give Generously: Share God's love through service and giving
Remember:
- Advent is about waiting with expectation, not impatience
- Focus on Christ's coming, not just holiday preparations
- Celebrate both His first and second comings
- Advent prepares hearts to truly worship at Christmas
