Quick Summary

Why Easter Is the Most Important Holiday
"He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay."
Matthew 28:6Easter is Christianity's most significant celebration. Without the resurrection, there is no Christianity. As Paul wrote, "If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile" (1 Corinthians 15:17).
The Easter Story: Death, Burial, Resurrection
Good Friday: The Crucifixion
- Jesus was betrayed by Judas and arrested
- Falsely accused and sentenced to death
- Crucified on a Roman cross at Golgotha
- Died bearing humanity's sins
- Said "It is finished" and gave up His spirit
Saturday: The Burial
- Joseph of Arimathea requested Jesus' body
- Jesus was wrapped in linen and placed in a tomb
- A large stone sealed the entrance
- Roman guards stationed to prevent theft
- Disciples devastated, hope seemingly lost
Easter Sunday: The Resurrection
- Women came to the tomb at dawn
- Found the stone rolled away, tomb empty
- Angels announced: "He has risen!"
- Jesus appeared to Mary, disciples, and 500+ witnesses
- Death was defeated forever
Why Jesus Had to Die
1. To Pay Sin's Penalty
"The wages of sin is death" (Romans 6:23). Jesus paid the penalty we owed so we could be forgiven.
2. As Our Substitute
Jesus took our place. He bore God's wrath that we deserved. "God made him who had no sin to be sin for us" (2 Cor 5:21).
3. To Satisfy God's Justice
God is holy and just. Sin must be punished. Jesus satisfied God's justice while demonstrating His love.
4. To Fulfill Prophecy
The Old Testament predicted the Messiah would suffer and die for sins (Isaiah 53, Psalm 22).
5. To Defeat Satan
Through death, Jesus destroyed the power of Satan and death itself (Hebrews 2:14).
6. To Reconcile Us to God
Sin separated us from God. Jesus' death removed the barrier and restored relationship (Colossians 1:19-20).
Evidence for the Resurrection
1. The Empty Tomb
Even Jesus' enemies acknowledged the tomb was empty. No one could produce a body.
2. Eyewitness Testimony
Over 500 people saw the risen Christ (1 Cor 15:6). Multiple independent accounts.
3. Transformed Disciples
The disciples went from terrified and hiding to boldly proclaiming resurrection—willing to die for it.
4. Conversion of Skeptics
James (Jesus' brother) and Paul (persecutor of Christians) became believers after seeing the risen Christ.
5. Birth of the Church
The Christian church exploded immediately after the resurrection in the same city where Jesus was crucified.
6. Changed Lives for 2,000 Years
The resurrection continues to transform lives. Billions have encountered the living Christ.
